How much sodium during marathon efforts is enough?

Why sodium is not just about cramps
Most runners think about sodium only when they think about cramping. That's too narrow a frame.
Cramping is more complicated than a simple electrolyte shortage. Neuromuscular fatigue, pacing errors, training history and muscle damage all contribute. So sodium isn't a magic anti-cramp switch. Sweat sodium concentration. Not everyone loses the same amount per litre. Heavy, salty sweaters finish sessions with visible white salt lines on caps, tops or faces. If that's you, your sodium requirement is above average — and you should plan accordingly, not hope the race is cool enough to avoid the problem.
Conditions and pace. Heat, humidity and race intensity all push requirements up. A cool spring marathon and a warm autumn race don't need the same sodium strategy. The faster you run relative to your fitness level, the less margin you have for errors in either direction.
